Week 34 Deep Pantry / Food Storage Challenge

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12

A deep pantry a good thing to have.

Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out. If you are having a hard time trying to afford filling a deep pantry read my post on “having a Deep Pantry on a tight budget.

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

5 Pounds Shortening / Canned milk

6 Pounds shortening, oil or lard I use lard, avocado, and olive oil to cook with since it is better for you then the hydrogenated shortenings. I do keep a little shortening and vegetable oil on hand. I use the oil in a spray bottle to spray the bottom of pans. The shortening I use in soap. As with everything be sure to rotate. If you plan to make your own soaps you might want to try and get a little extra.
Shortening does have a very long shelf life if keep unopened and in a cool place. I also have lard and tallow canned which extends the self-life. As with everything be sure to rotate.

Canned Milk 20 cans of milk, Wal-Mart has it for 92 cents a can. When storing canned milk you want to be sure and rotate. It does have a couple year shelf life but not much longer. As with all your canned goods, it is best to store in a cool dark place. You can also can your own milk. Canned milk is also good to have on hand to use to make baby formula in an emergency.  You can see how to here

How is the Alternative washing coming along?

Are you learning how to make soap? If you don’t have anyone to teach you there are several U tube video how too’s.

Add some more to your money stash. Remember every little bit adds up.

Put back a little more water.

What I got done in the last couple weeks,

I got all 3 cases of corn either canned or in the freezer. 50 pounds of tallow rendered and in the freezer, I bought 2 cases of apples that I will work on this week, Picked 4-5 gallon buckets of plumes which I will also work on this week, canned 18 pints of chicken chipotle. I went to the farmers market and found some garlic I bought 4 and will get some more later,  I want to use them to plant this fall, They also had some large herb plants for a  dollar I got 2 thyme, 1 greek oregano, 1 Cuban oregano, and 1 marjoram. I want to try and get some starts from these to get more plants going.  I think that is about it.

What were you able to get done this week?

    Hi-Ya;
A couple of things I’ll add, of course hehehe

I have switched to 98% Coconut Oils, both Liquid and Semi-solid. They both store a very long time if done correctly. A can of good old Crisco will go for a year or two with me. I usually have a bottle of really expensive and exotic oils for Salads but that about it. OHHHH yeah, and a 5 gallon container of Peanut Oil for deep frying the Turkey when time, keep that frozen until a week before and refreeze till the next year, on the same container for going on 5 years now.

I don’t store Canned Milk, I do have a LOT of dried moo, although I do get a case of Coconut Milk about every 3 months, again it will keep for several years.

Had to chuckle at your “Alternative Washing” Well I tried to wash the clothing during the week, but the Washer keeps me awake HAHAHAH

Been stashing $$$ Like crazy, retiring in 4 months so I figured I might put a little extra away, and I’m sure as HELLLLL not going to put into the Banks, PERIOD!!!

Last couple of weeks has been good for the Deep Pantry, a LOT of stuff canned and drying Herbs and the likes.

Planning the Winter Garden and getting ready to build that Greenhouse FINALLY.

    NRP,
Only 4 months left haha it is going by fast, are you ready?
I have gotten where I love cooking with coconut oil and avocado oil although still have to have lard for fry bread and pie crust. We use peanut oil a couple times a year ( Labor day weekend for our music festival, we do a lot of cooking for that and then to fry up the turkey on Thanksgiving) and we keep ours for several years love how it will keep for so long.
Question for you on the coconut milk do you get it in cans or the cartons I have started using a lot of coconut and almond milk and I am not sure how long it will last on the shelf.
    Have a great weekend.

      Rancher’s Wife.
I only buy the Coconut Milk in the Cans, never the cartons, worried about long-term storage and the cartons leaking.
BTW, I buy it in ABQ at the 99 Asian Market by the case, about 1/3 less that anywhere else. Have a Thai group here that “someone” is going to ABQ at lease once a week 🙂
