MY FAVORITE HOMEMADE COUGH SYRUP

Print Friendly, PDF & Email
Well, the cold and flu season is almost here and when it gets here I like to have this on hand if someone gets a cough.

This cough syrup works so well for us. It doesn’t taste very good but works. The last time I made this a friend of Joleen’s had a bad cough and Joleen told her she needed some of my cough syrup, she told her it tastes awful but it works and Joleen hates to take it but she knows it works.
I make a gallon every year and it will usually last all year. It is better if it can sit a few weeks to a month before you use.

Here is what you need

5 LEMONS

2 LARGE ONIONS

1 GARLIC BULB

3 INCH PIECE OF GINGER ROOT

3 ½ CUPS HONEY  ( I like to use a quart and a quarter )

1 PT BLACKBERRY BRANDY

1 PT PEPPERMINT SCHNAPPS

GALLON JAR

SLICE THE LEMONS, AND PEEL AND SLICE THE ONIONS, PEEL AND THINLY SLICE THE GINGER ROOT, PEEL AND SLIGHTLY SMASH THE GARLIC CLOVES.
LAYER THE ONIONS, LEMONS, GARLIC, AND GINGER IN THE GALLON JAR.
POUR THE HONEY OVER THE LAYERS.
NEXT, POUR THE SCHNAPPS
OVER THE LAYERS
THEN THE BRANDY.
COVER AND STORE IN A COOL DARK PLACE FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE USING.
IT WILL KEEP UP TO A YEAR IF KEEP IN A COOL DARK PLACE.
WHEN I GET READY TO MAKE MORE IF I STILL HAVE SOME LEFT FROM THE YEAR BEFORE I POUR IT UP INTO A DARK BOTTLE AND USE WHILE WAITING FOR THE NEW ONE TO SIT.
GIVE ADULTS I TBL CHILDREN UNDER 12 GIVE 1/4 TEASPOON DO NOT GIVE TO CHILDREN UNDER ONE.
WHEN WE HAVE A BAD COUGH I GIVE IT IN A  2 OUNCE SHOT GLASS.

OMG, going from a scorcher summer with recorded breaking heat and mega fires to Cold and Flu season already…. UGHHHHH

Thinking on a 1/2 batch and check it out, even good for Vampires and Cold nights, should heat ya right up…..

I wanted to also add the Disclaimer that Ranchers Wife forgot, this product is not for those under the age of 21, “1 PT BLACKBERRY BRANDY, 1 PT PEPPERMINT SCHNAPPS”
    🙂 :-).

PS, I’m thinking in a 1/2 gallon Mason Jar, add a glass weight to hold the ‘Floating’ Fruit into the liquid……

      NRP,
I know right, I can’t believe it is already the end of September not sure where all the time has gone. I shared this to FB and one of my daughters seen it she said she could smell it as soon as she saw the picture, she hated the taste but she would take it since it always helped haha.
I just keep mine on the counter then stir every now and then.

        Rancher’s Wife;

Well built a batch of this formula last night. Got right at 1 gallon of mix, admittedly I used a few more Lemons and a little shy of 5 pounds of Honey.

Will see how it works in a week or so.

        A couple of observations.
Had a heck of a time finding BLACKBERRY BRANDY, ended up going to the el-cheep-o liquor store to find it, and to be honest if I had tasted it before adding it I would have tossed it and found something else. BUT hopefully the Onions and Lemons will cover the taste. Maybe that why the Kids did not like the taste??? 🙂

The fruit is floating like crazy, so probably need to sink it with a weight or something.

Also a question, do you cover it with a hunk of Cheese Cloth or just put the lid back on? Maybe Cloth for a bit than cover?????

Lastly, after building this, it actually looks very VERY healthy for ya, all the right stuff for a daily infusion.
ALL of the ingredients contain antioxidants and/or Vit C. have you considered doing a shot-glass a day?
After all an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…..

BUT you’d need to get rid of that BLACKBERRY BRANDY and maybe use just regular Brandy…. HAHAHAHAHA

    NRP,
Hadn’t really thought about a shot a day haha I try to use fire cider for my shot a day ( which I need to get put together). I do put a lid on it, and I stir it up every few days but I think a weight would work great. As for the yummy (haha) Blackberry Brandy haven’t you ever heard of the old-timey remedy of blackberry brandy for the flu haha there must be something in it that is good for helping with a cough. And I agree it is nasty, when I was younger I got pretty sick and my boss sent me home and told me to stop by and get a bottle of blackberry brandy to drink to help get better I was thinking oh it wouldn’t be too bad then I tasted it and holy cow it really wasn’t all that wonderful haha if I remember right though I drank a pretty good portion of it.

I left you a message on the other site wanted to let you know they are doing the honey sale again this coming weekend if you are interested. Just let me know if you are I will get you the details.
