Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out. If you are having a hard time trying to afford filling a deep pantry read my post on “having a Deep Pantry on a tight budget.

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

50 pounds oats / powdered eggs

50 Pounds of Oats, Wal-Mart has oats for 13.58 for 10 pounds or 1.68 for the 2 pounds 10 oz. containers, I get mine at IFA ( our local feed store) they have them for 30.00 for 50 pounds. When storing oats use the same methods as you would for flour or wheat. And remember you can grind them to use for oat flour.

Powdered eggs, make sure to get the eggs that you can cook with. If you get the ones that say for scrambled eggs they will not work for cooking. You can dehydrate your own powdered eggs, if you do they do need to be stored in the freezer.

Even if you have chickens it would be a good idea to have some powdered eggs on hand for a backup if your chickens are not laying for some reason.

The Action Item for this month is to learn to sew.

If you know the basics then you can make your own clothes and your children’s clothes. There are a lot of easy patterns out there. It is really nice when you can also mend your family’s clothes be it fixing a hole or taking up something. If you know someone who sews they would more than likely love to teach you how. I saved so much money when my kids were smaller by making theirs and my clothes.

The extra item for this month is fuel.

You should have a little extra on hand especially if you have a generator. Be very careful when you store extra fuel. If at all possible you should keep it in an outbuilding because there will be fumes from it. When you store gas for an extended period of time you need to add a fuel stabilizer to it, and if you can try to rotate it pretty often. Store what you use, if you have diesel vehicles you will also need to store some diesel.

You should never let your fuel levels in your vehicles get below ½ a tank. I use to be bad about waiting till the last minute ( even though I know better) but when Katie’s boyfriend passed away I was trying to get to her house before they told her. I was almost on empty so I had to waste time to go get fuel before I could get to her. I will never let my fuel get that low again. It was the worst feeling in the world trying to hurry and having to stop and get fuel.

What was I able to get done?

I am going to put the past couple weeks on this post since my internet was down and I didn’t get the previous challenges out on time. I bought several pumpkins that I will can, got several gallons of peaches in the freezer, bought 50 pounds of sugar, 2 cases of cream of mushroom soup, 1 case of cream of chicken soup, a few bags of Halloween clearance sale candy, a few pounds of pastas, some ragu pasta cheese sauce, coffee, and tea bags.

What were you able to get done this week?
