What to Buy in March

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I missed getting Feburays what to buy post. I will get it put together and post it so if you want a reference for February.

March is “National Frozen Foods Month” Most grocery stores will have sales on certain frozen foods so now is the time to stock up if what you use is on sale. Remember though don’t buy something that is on sale if it isn’t already something you use. Look for vegetables, if you don’t have a lot of freezer space you can dehydrate.

Spring cleaning, some things go on sale for spring cleaning so now is the time to stick up on cleaning supplies, including paper towels, cloth’s, garbage bags, and protective gloves.

Other things that are usually on sale in March is Luggage. Now is the time to get luggage if you need new or if you are planning a trip and know you will need some. Also if you have kids you might think about picking it up on sale for Birthday or Christmas gifts. Another idea is to use a smaller bag for an Easter basket.

Holidays

Saint Patrick’s day. You will want to look for chocolate remember you can chop it up to use in cookies, cakes, muffins, or just eat it.
Corned beef is also on sale get an extra one or two to put in the freezer and even better if you can get them on clearance sale.
Cabbage, make freezer coleslaw, sour kraut, cabbage rolls ( freeze extra for later).
Pick up clearance sale decorations for next year.
If you can find the little black pots on clearance sale pick up a few to use for Halloween. Also if you have children look for the gold and green coins on clearance sale to use in sensory bins or just for them to use as play money.

March Madness, Snacks, cheese crackers, dips, fruit and veggie trays ( make sure these are a really good deal it may be cheaper to make your own), sandwich items ( you can freeze the lunch meats) wings (these can also be frozen to use later), chips ( you can rebag into smaller bags for lunches).

Marti Gras, Feathers and feather mask ( the mask are great fun for kids to play with), if you can find the mask on a really good clearance sale you can use the feathers for arts and crafts with the kids. String beads ( great for dress up and also if you are going to have a kid’s birthday party buy these on sale or clearance sale for party favors).

Produce in season, Artichokes, asparagus, avocados, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celery, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, limes, mushrooms, onions, peas, radishes, rhubarb, spinach, and strawberries. If you use any of these try to buy in bulk when on sale and freeze, dehydrate, ferment, or can.

Clearance

Most stores will start putting their winter stuff on sale. So now is the time to get the winter gear for next year such as hats, insulated gloves, coats ( you can even get your children’s coat for next year just get it a size or two larger )wool socks, etc. Also if you do any winter sports or activities look for clearance sale on items that you use for these. Such as skis, snowboards, sleds, snow shovels, tubes etc.

And don’t forget the after holidays clearance sales.

Pick up clearance sale decorations for next year.
If you can find the little black pots on clearance sale pick up a few to use for Halloween. Also if you have children look for the gold and green coins on clearance sale to use in sensory bins or just for them to use as play money.

Holy Cow, tis March already, where did February go?
Isn’t amazing that a Store can put something “on sale” for 50% off????
Does that mean you paid 50% to much the last time you bought it? Probably.
Make sure when you buy Sale Items, check the Nest Buy Dates, is it 2 years beyond the date? What is it your buying, does the BB Date really matter?

BTW, here is my two cents worth on upcoming prices on “everything”. These are examples of Fuel Prices in the last 40 days
    Diesel was $2.51 now $2.99
    Gas was $2.09 now $2.79
    Propane was $1.64 now $2.05
Does anyone here believe that prices on EVERYTHING is not going up?

As to Connie’s words, Are you planing St. Patrick’s Day next year, will you want a Corned Beef, at 3 times the cost? Think it cant happen?
If, and that’s a HUGE “IF” you can afford it, buy a little extra every time you get something you WILL use.
A couple of old sayings, “Use one, Buy two”, “First in First out”, Use what you Store, Store what you Use”.

Please have a Safe and “Good” day.

      Joani:
When I think of Corned Beef I think of the Corned Beef Brisket, most stores carry their own brand, Safeway has Signature. This is a Raw Beef, usually sealed in a Vacuum Wrap in the Meat section.
The Caned is “ok” not my favorite but will do fried up for Breakfast or on a Sandwich.

The Brisket is easy to cook:
I always freeze them for storage,
So the night before I set the still frozen brisket in a large Crock Pot and add just enough water to cover it.
Set on High for the first few hours to thaw and start to heat up.
I set on Medium heat overnight, I add the small spice pack in the morning and set on Low, not warm for the rest of the day
1.5 hours before eating I add a few Potatoes and set back on High
15 minutes before serving I add the Cabbage cut in quarters and cook. Usually need to remove the meat for room for the Cabbage, but it can sit covered, no problem, I will guarantee it’s cooked.

I always serve with a small (very small) dish of Yellow Mustard as a side for the meat….

      Enjoy.

      PS:
When on sale (50% off or more), I usually get several, they freeze very well and are good about anytime of the year.
