Deep Pantry

Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out.

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

50 Pounds Beans/Gelatin, Pudding

50 pounds of beans, get the beans that your family will eat, just about the only thing my family eats is pintos so that is just about all I store. I do have a few black and kidney beans (just to have a little variety) Pinto Beans at Wal-Mart are 72 cents for a 15.8 oz bag or 13.42 for a 20-pound bag.

Gelatin, Wal-Mart has the small packs of Jello for 50 cents. You can also make your own, with unflavored gelatin and fruit juice or Kool-Aid, You can get unflavored gelatin in bulk at Bulk foods .com.

Pudding, Wal-Mart has the small packs for 68 cents or once again you can make your own. You can also get Corn Starch at Bulk Foods

Basic Pudding Mix

8 cups Powder Milk

4 cups sugar

4 cups Corn Starch

1 teaspoon salt

Stir together all ingredients until well blended.  Store in a covered container. Attach a tag with mixing instructions.

For Pudding

1 Cup of mix

3 cups boiling water

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 Tablespoon Butter

Place one cup of the mix in a small saucepan.  Slowly add 3 cups of boiling water, stirring as you add the water.  Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly until the mixture is thickened. Add 1 tablespoon of butter at the end of the cooking time once the mixture has thickened.

For Chocolate Pudding

Add 3 tablespoons cocoa powder to the dry mix before cooking.

For Lemon

Omit vanilla and add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon lemon zest.

For Banana

Add 1 tablespoon Banana extract (when you add vanilla) and 1 cup sliced or mashed bananas to cooled pudding

Keep working on your alternate cooking sources. There are so many options from Solar, wonder oven, bbq grill, rocket stove, even on your wood stove if you have one, to name a few.

Have you learned anything about canning or found someone who can teach you?

Add some more to your water, buy some or fill your own containers.

Add more to your money stash. Remember it all adds up.

What were you able to get done this week.

    Great minds think alike HAHAHAHA

Just picked up 50# of Anasazi Beans from Adobe Mills; Great place even better people.
How do I store them you asked???
Well a 3.5 gallon bucket will hold right at 25 pounds.
Where did I get those Buckets you asked?
Ask almost any Bakery and they will (usually) give you buckets, almost every size you can imagine from One Gallon to 5 Gallon with the lids. They usually already have them cleaned out. And yes they are Food Safe Buckets.
So, I get them home, wipe them with a clean dish cloth let them air dry for a while, than weigh 25# into each, drop in a cpl of Bay Leaves and seal them up with the original lids OR I will get some Gama Lids for the buckets I use daily/weekly, makes it a lot easier.
Make sure top Date and Label the Buckets, I simply use a Black Marker and poof, there ya go.

I’m not so much of a Gelatin, Pudding person, maybe once a year sort of thing, BUT, Thank You for the recipes on how to make such animals hehehe

Good reminder on the “Alternate Cooking”. One can have all the food they need stored up, but if you can’t cook it……. Enough Said.

I have to tell you I found a HUGE score this past week….
Found someone about 5 miles from me that sells Fresh Milk….
OMG, if you have never had true Fresh Milk you’re missing the boot for sure.
So; just because I did a side-by-side taste test….. HAHAHAH
After the second taste on both, good ole Blue got almost a full 1/2 gallon of Store Bought Milk. At first he would not even drink that stuff.
The Cost you asked? Right now decent Milk from a store is what? About $5.oo per gallon? This Fresh Moo is $6.oo a Gallon, well worth the cost I guarantee you right now.

Other than that, been a good week for sure, BTW, this Retirement stuff is HARD WORK hahahaha, I need to go back to work to rest I believe…….

I agree, even just making a budget can really help you save. Sometimes when we don’t take a look at our finances, it makes it difficult to realize that you’re actually overspending
