Week 6 Deep Pantry/Food Storage Challenge

A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12

Remember having a deep pantry isnโ€™t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isnโ€™t going to do you much good if you canโ€™t cook it when the power is out. If you are having a hard time trying to afford to fillย a deep pantry read my post onย โ€œhaving a Deep Pantry on a tight budget.โ€

Donโ€™t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Letโ€™s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer.ย If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said letโ€™s make this a place where we can share and encourage othersย to get that deep pantry.

This first month will be a jump start to get a little ahead so if things go south before you can get everything you want, at least you have something to survive on.
The amounts are for two people If you have more just double to what you need.

This week you will want to get.

ย 6 pounds of salt / 10 pounds of dry beans.

I buy my salt at the farm store 50 pounds for about ten dollars it isnโ€™t iodized but we take additional iodine pills. You can get this salt to use in preserving foods (canning ) and get the iodized salt for the table. Also sea salt is a very good choice, it is a lot better for you then the processed white table salt it is a little more expensive though so get what you can afford.

Get the beans that your family likes best we eat a lot of pinto beans so that is what we have the most of plus I can can them then I can make, been soup, refried beans or anything that calls for beans.

The Action Itemย for this month is to get your garden planned, even if you only have a small area, you can plant a lot ( there areย all kinds of information on the web for small area gardening). If you haveย already had a garden try to expand and add a few more things, maybe even some things you havenโ€™t tried to grow before. You might want to look into berry bushes and fruit trees also. If you have landscaping in your yard you might want to think about replacing some things with edibles (If you have to water might as well water something that gives something back).

The extra itemย for this month will be garden seeds,ย bushes, trees, andย herbs. After you get your garden planned try to start orderingย theย seeds and things you needย for it. Also, start getting your seeds started.

Every week you will want to put back water. You can buy it, or fill your empty juice and soda bottles. You can also store water in your empty canning jars, as you empty your jars just add some water and put the lid back on. You donโ€™t have to can this water but if you wanted to you could. You can also put water in bleach and detergent bottles ( this will be non-potable but you could flush and wash dishes with it.).ย You can go here for more information water

Every week you will also want to put back a few dollars, even if it is a small amount it will add up. Save your ones and if you can your fives and all your loose change from paying with cash. It will add up pretty quickly.

What were you able to do for your deep pantry?
