A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12
Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out.
Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.
This first month was a jump start to get a little ahead so if things go south before you can get everything you want, at least you have something to survive on.
The amounts are for two people If you have more just double to what you need.
If you are having a hard time trying to afford to fill a deep pantry read my post on ”Having a Deep Pantry on a tight budget” Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer.
If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry. The first month was a jump start to get a little ahead so if things go south before you can get everything you want, at least you have something to survive on. If you are just starting you will want to go back and start with January’s challenge. The amounts are for two people If you have more just double to what you need. Also while you are doing this if you see something on sale that you think you will need to pick it up. You can catch up with the list later. Always better to buy when on sale than not.
8 Cans of canned meat / Popcorn
Canned meat, You can can your own or buy store-bought. If you can catch a good sale on chicken, ground beef, stew meat or roast can your own it is super easy to can meat. If you don’t can, then just buy store-bought tuna, chicken, Spam, corned beef, or even freeze-dried. If you watch for sales you can pick up tuna for 50 cents. Wal-Mart has tuna for 78 cents a can and 12 oz spam for 2.64, I forgot to check the price of canned chicken but I don’t think it is to bad.
Popcorn, this is nice to have just for snack food. Learn how to cook this on the stove. This and the microwave are the only ways I cook popcorn, I think it tastes way better cooked on the stove, but when in a hurry I will throw it in the microwave. You can also use it for caramel corn, popcorn balls, or make your own spiced flavorings to sprinkle on.
The extra item for this month is Kids Clothes. If you have small kids look at second-hand stores and yard sales for clothes that are larger sizes than what they are in now. If your kids are grown still get children’s clothes when you find a good buy on them, this way you have some put back for grandkids or someone who may need them. I look for baby clothes and things now even though neither of my girls has kids yet. I know how hard it is for young families, so I want to be able to help them out when the time comes for that. I also put back kid’s clothes just to have on hand.
The Action item this month is to get all your information off the computer. If you are like me you find things on the internet then save them on your computer. It is a good idea to get in the habit of printing or at least putting on a flash drive (if on a flash drive be sure to have a protected computer) all that information just in case your computer crashes or you have no power at least you will have all the information that you need (when my computer got a virus a few years back I had a ton of stuff on it that I couldn’t get off). Get some notebooks and store the information by subject then when you need it you will be able to find it. eg. all cooking in one notebook all medical in another.
Every week you will want to put water back. You can buy it, or fill your empty juice and soda bottles. You can also store water in your empty canning jars, as you empty your jars just add some water and put the lid back on. You don’t have to can this water but if you wanted to you could. You can also put water in bleach and detergent bottles ( this will be non-potable but you could flush and wash dishes with it.). You can go here for more information water.
Every week you will also want to put back a few dollars, even if it is a small amount it will add up. Save your ones and if you can your fives and all your loose change from paying with cash. It will add up pretty quick.
Any time you have a chance to pick up something extra do so. I think we are running out of time to have things put together, the stock market is at all-time highs, every time in history that it has done that it eventually falls way back down. From what I can see we are following the same path as they did right before the great depression. So the more prepared you are the better you will be able to deal with things.
